Getting there
Getting to and around the Douro Valley
| How | Time | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car: Drive inland from Porto using the A4 highway, then connect to the N222 at Peso da Régua to drive alongside the river. | 1.5 hours to Peso da Régua | Rental and tolls vary | Driving allows you to visit secluded quintas and hilltop viewpoints that trains and boats cannot reach. |
| Train: Take the Linha do Douro train from Porto (São Bento or Campanhã stations) directly to Peso da Régua, Pinhão, or Pocinho. | 2-3 hours depending on the stop | €10-€15 each way | The most scenic section of the train ride begins after Peso da Régua as the tracks run tightly along the water. |
| Boat: Board a river cruise, either for a multi-day hotel ship voyage, a full-day trip from Porto, or a short Rabelo boat ride from Pinhão. | 1 hour to 1 week | €12.50 to €3,000+ | Short cruises from Pinhão are ideal if you arrive by car or train; full-day trips from Porto often combine a boat ride with bus transport. |
| Tour: Join a guided small-group or private wine tour departing from Porto, usually including transport, winery visits, lunch, and a boat ride. | 9-10 hours (full day) | €90-€150 | Highly recommended for wine tasting, as you avoid navigating winding mountain roads after drinking. |

Practical advice for your visit
If you plan to rent a car, the drive along the N222 between Peso da Régua and Pinhão is exceptionally scenic. However, driving means someone has to be the designated driver. Given the winding mountain roads and generous wine pours, a guided tour or the train is often safer and more relaxing.
Be prepared for the terrain. Vineyards are steep, and winery paths are often cobblestone or dirt. Wear comfortable, non-slip walking shoes. Also, pack a light jacket or sweater; while the valley gets hot during the day, boat decks and winery cellars can be surprisingly cool.

Planning questions
How far is the Douro Valley from Porto?
By car, it takes about 1.5 hours to drive inland to Peso da Régua using the A4 highway. By train, the journey takes 2 to 3 hours depending on your destination stop.
Can you swim in the Douro River?
Swimming in the main river channel is discouraged due to strong currents and heavy boat traffic. If you want to swim, look for designated river beaches (praias fluviais).
What should I wear on a river cruise?
Wear lightweight clothing in the summer and bring a light jacket or packable scarf for the breezy boat deck. Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen) is essential.
