About the Douro River

The Douro River flows from Spain across northern Portugal to the Atlantic Ocean. For centuries, it served as the transport route for Port wine, carried on traditional Rabelo boats to the cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. Today, five dams with locks make the river navigable for modern cruise ships and tour boats.

Most visitors experience the river by taking a Tickets or driving the scenic N222 road. The Linha do Douro railway also hugs the riverbank, offering incredible views between Peso da Régua and Pocinho.

When deciding Porto to Douro, consider a guided tour if you want to drink wine, as the valley roads are steep and winding. For more advice, check our guide on the Best time to visit.

The only thing that was disappointing is that we were unaware of the audio about the bridges that could be downloaded. More communication at the check in point would have been. Also the check in point was not easy to find.

A visit to Porto would not be complete without a ride down the Douro River. The views of the area and the six bridges are spectacular. This is a good way to put your feet up, relax and enjoy the city.

It was a beautiful boat, amazing hosts and views. Highly recommend! Went out to see the ocean and a few bridges. Didn't see all 7 bridges as the boat mast was too high to fit under a bridge. Sunshine, beautiful music, great hosts with stories. A lovely afternoon!

I thought this was excellent. Great value for money and not over crowded. The boat felt like luxury and the wine was also very nice. I’d definitely recommend 👌

Luis was an excellent guide, escorting us from Porto to the Douro Valley with humor and lots of interesting facts and stories about the area and, of course, wine. We enjoyed the tastings at small family run wineries, the delicious home cooked lunch and the leisurely boat cruise on the river. It was a lovely day and perfect excursion!

We had a fabulous time on the small group Douro River tour. The weather cooperated. Sandro (out guide and driver) provided an entertaining, running commentary on what we we saw. I was not a fan of the boat ride (not the best use of time IMHO), but my wife thoroughly enjoyed that segment of the trip. Overall two thumbs up (Sandro is phenomenal).

Amazing tour of Douro Valley was the highlight of my trip to Portugal. Bernardo was an excellent guide sharing stories of his family, history and Portugese culture. The wineries we visited were small, family run, and filled with love and care for the wine they produce. Highly recommend!

FAQ

Common questions

All questions

What is the best way to see the Douro River?

The best way depends on your goals. For wine lovers, a guided full-day tour from Porto is ideal, as it includes transport, tastings, and a short cruise. For independent travelers, taking the Linha do Douro train or driving the N222 offers incredible views.

How long is a Douro River cruise?

Cruise durations vary widely. Traditional Rabelo boat tours from Pinhão last 1 to 2 hours. Six-bridge cruises in Porto take about 50 minutes. Full-day trips from Porto last 9 to 10 hours, while luxury hotel ships offer multi-day voyages up to a week.

When is the best time to visit the Douro Valley?

The main season runs from April to October. September and October are the absolute best months to visit, as you can witness the grape harvest (vindima). Read more about the Best time to visit.

Is the train or boat better for seeing the Douro Valley?

Both offer great views. The Linha do Douro train hugs the riverbank closely past Peso da Régua, offering a higher vantage point. Boats provide a unique perspective from the water itself. Many visitors do both: take the train to Pinhão and then book a short river cruise.

Can you swim in the Douro River?

Swimming in the main river channel is generally discouraged due to active boat traffic and currents. Instead, visitors should use designated river beaches (praias fluviais) if they want to swim.

How many locks are on the Douro River in Portugal?

There are 5 dams with locks on the Portuguese section of the river. These regulate the river's flow and allow cruise ships and tour boats to navigate safely. The Carrapatelo Lock features a massive 35-meter drop.
